Iconic Crosswalk Symbols

Despite pressure from EU regulators a couple decades ago, Berlin kept the iconic crosswalk symbols which were used in east Germany. This is a visible reminder of which areas were "behind the wall". Many stores sell souvenirs of the green walking man.

East Side Gallery

The area known as East Side Gallery, between two large train stations and beside the River Spree, is being revitalized with extensive construction.

Professional level paintings adorn the Berliner Mauer. The red man crosswalk symbol indicates this is in the old east German side of the city. When the wall was first constructed with barbed wire, people tried to escape across the river.
